Father’s Day is right around the corner. A homemade t-shirt is the perfect way to make someone smile. Whether you’re celebrating the day with your pops or if you just want to gift someone you know who’s a parent, putting love and time into a Father’s Day gift like this makes that person cherish it even more.
I created this t-shirt design for last year’s Father’s Day with a little help from Michaels. I subscribed to their emails, so each week they send coupons and the usual emails like that. But they also send how-to posts, and gift ideas like this! I thought the t-shirt was such a unique gift that I wanted to create one for my dad.
Here’s how you can make your own t-shirt for your dad – or any friend or parent you know! This makes for a great Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, birthday, and general gift.
Note: I bought all materials and assembled this shirt on my own. The links below are Michaels affiliate links, which means I make a small commission if you click and make a purchase. Thanks for your support!
DIY Father’s Day Gift T-Shirt Materials
- T-shirt
- Letter stickers
- Sponge pouncers
- Paint
- Recommended: Cardboard
Instructions
- Place cardboard inside shirt to separate the fabric and prevent the paint from seeping through.
- Peel off letter stickers and position them on the shirt. I used “D A D” for the top portion, and “est. 1992” (the year I was born) for the bottom portion.
- Dip sponge pouncers into paint and press onto shirt repeatedly, like a stamp.
- Alternate between paint colors, continuing to press onto the shirt. Adjust the pressure so some dots appear clear while others appear faded (light pressure).
- Continue painting until you’re satisfied with the design. Press pouncers onto the letters and cover letters to create the imprint of “D A D est. xxxx”
- Allow paint to dry.
- Peel off letters from the shirt.
* BONUS * Keep the letter stickers and reuse for an envelope or card!
